Regulatory Update

2018 KY RESIDENTIAL CODE & KY BUILDING CODE ADOPTED

The Department of Housing, Building & Construction has completed the final legislative review process for the 2018 Kentucky Building Code and 2018 Kentucky Residential Code.  The codes will be based on the 2015 International Building Code and 2015 International Residential Code, both with some Kentucky specific amendments.  The mandatory effective date will be January 1, 2019.

IMPORTANT:  The 2018 Kentucky Residential Code book which will incorporate the amendments will be available sometime this fall and the HBAK will send out a notice when the books become available, but if you would like to review the amendments, click the following links:

Effective August 22, 2018, the following Codes have been adopted:

  • 2018 Kentucky Building Code (Based on the 2015 International Building Code with Kentucky Amendments)
  • 2018 Kentucky Residential Code (Based on the 2015 International Residential Code with Kentucky Amendments)
  • 2015 International Mechanical Code
  • 2017 NFPA 70 - National Electrical Code
  • 2012 NFPA 101 - Life Safety Code (Health Care Facilities) 
     

A grace period allows the 2013 KBC and 2013 KRC or the 2018 KBC and 2018 KRC to be used until Jan. 1, 2019.  On Jan. 1, 2019, the 2018 KBC and 2018 KRC will be mandatory.
